Stop 1 in our 2020 Freedom Tour, celebrating the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II.
In the early 1930s, American writer Cliff Bradshaw arrives in Berlin to work on his novel. After securing a room in a boarding house run by Fraulein Schneider, he heads to the Kit Kat Klub, a sleazy nightclub frequented by German Nazi officers. He meets a British singer named Sally Bowles who is down on her luck. When she gets kicked out by her boyfriend, she begs to move in with Cliff.
Now the boarding house is home to Cliff and Sally, Fraulein Schneider, the disreputable and bitter Fraulein Kost, and the Jewish grocer Herr Schultz. Their friend and neighbor Ernst Ludwig is a frequent visitor, though he will eventually begin to display the Nazi symbol on his armband. As the Nazi party gains power and life becomes increasingly bleak, Fraulein Schneider and Herr Schultz announce their engagement and Sally reveals her pregnancy.
The story is moderated by the Kit Kat Klub’s flamboyant and insightful Master of Ceremonies and his cabaret singers, who help to perform memorable songs like “Wilkommen” and the titular “Cabaret.”
