The Sound of Music

July 15-31 Weekends, NCHS Auditorium

Event date: 7/15/2022 7:30 PM - 7/31/2022 3:00 PM Export event
The Sound of Music

The hills are alive with the sound of music! Wait, do we mean Rotary Hill? I think that's the only hill in Naperville.

Actually, we mean the perennial favorite Broadway Musical that was turned into the classic Julie Andrews movie. It was held in Naperville opening July 15, 2022 for three weekends, performed in the Naperville Central High School Auditorium, finally returning to our pre-COVID home that we've performed in since 1991.

EVERY SHOW A STANDING OVATION!

"I've seen several versions and this is the BEST Sound of Music I've seen."

Summer Place told the tale of young novice Maria, called upon by her Mother Abbess to care for the children of the widowed Captain Georg von Trapp. She falls in love with the children while the Captain falls in love with her.

But it's not only a love story; the play was set in Austria in the early days of World War II at the onset of the German occupation, and Nazis exert an ever-increasing hold on the life of the von Trapp family, to the point of their plan to escape.

As is the case with many art forms, this play holds a mirror to society. The von Trapps see the future of an oppressive, totalitarian government while others around them either embrace it or hope to just be able to live with it. The play is as relevant today as it was when it debuted in 1959.

Summer Place assembled a talented group of actors, directors and technicians from all over the Chicagoland area to produce this wonderful show. Plus, we  teamed up with the Naperville Chorus to bring you soaring sounds from the Abbey of Nonnberg. Our show opens with the sisters of the Abbey singing evening prayers. The ladies of the Chorus add to our own ensemble of beautiful voices to swell the opening number to angelic heights. We hear them again several times throughout the story, especially the climactic finale.

Other selected directing credits include A Chorus Line, West Side Story, Miss Saigon, Chess, Jesus Christ Superstar, and the play Memory of Water. A huge thank you to all friends and family for coming to support me, this show and the arts - may your heart want to sing every song it hears!

Director’s Note

Depending on the point of view, this production has either been six months or thirty years in the making.

Based on the 1949 memoir of Maria von Trapp, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, The Sound of Music chronicles the adventures of a young postulant seeking her true calling when she meets a widower with 7 children and becomes conflicted as to what her true calling actually is. The now iconic movie was released in 1965. This happened to be the very first movie my 5 year old brother ever saw. It was his first time in a movie theater. It was his first time seeing a movie in color and it happened to be a movie musical. Like millions of others, he fell in love with the musical. He loved the opening sequence, he loved the music, and of course he loved the story. From this moment, his passion for the movie, never waned and over the next twenty some years (some of which I wasn’t born yet) my brother would be whispering in my ear about how the hills are alive.

So, it would make sense that in 1992, when I was making plans to direct my first full length musical, my brother would be (politely?) encouraging me to begin with the Sound of Music. At that point, I had never seen it which he had found utter blasphemy. I had graduated college the year before but somehow, I had missed this show up until then. I had never seen the movie despite repeated showings on television. If a local community theatre had mounted a production, I seemed to miss the chance to see it for one reason or another. At that point, I was only familiar with some of the songs from the movie. As a result, I was somewhat mildly interested in the show but not a particular fan of it. We thus decided on another musical and my directing career officially began. This same exact process repeated itself for thirty years whether it was a show I was planning to produce or a project I was applying to direct. Whenever a company advertised that they were going to present the Sound of Music, my brother would ask me if I was going to apply. It became a sort of inside joke between us.

When Don Gingold, president of Summer Place Theatre and I had our first communication about this production it was back in January of this year. By this time, I had finally seen the movie but one time in 2012 and had seen the stage production twice. I confessed that I really didn’t remember much about the details of the show. I was more familiar now with the overall plot and the characters but in terms of the many intricacies, I was not a Sound of Music aficionado. This does not bother me, however, as it provides the enjoyable opportunity to look at a script with new eyes and perhaps contribute a fresh spin to a story that has been told multiple times before. I also relayed to him the narrative about my brother and because he has been one of my biggest champions, I felt a personal responsibility to do this show with as much dedication, authenticity, and dignity possible.

Well, here we are! What has been most interesting about this journey from concept to production are the differences between the stage version, the movie and then the new stage version. When I began analyzing the script, I was completely surprised by many things. The song order was different. Some of the songs functions in the show are different than they are in the movie. Some of them are sung by additional characters. Some songs were cut and replaced by others. And even other songs were cut out entirely. Yet, when I read the script as originally intended, I became immediately excited. The story is a lot more layered, and the characters have more depth in this version than the Hollywood movie version of the story. Don was equally focused on ensuring that all plot points including the political elements got the attention they deserve and without necessarily watering it down. But you can decide for yourself on all these matters. Your experience is your own and that is one of the reasons seeing live theatre so unique.

So, sit back and enjoy what we hope is a production of Sound of Music that contains something you may have never seen before. Perhaps you will see something that may resonate with you that that hadn’t previously. Or maybe you will just let the show take you to a familiar place of happiness like visiting an old friend. Feel free to laugh, cry, agree, disagree, and/or otherwise emote with us.

I’d like to give a huge thank you to the entire team for their outstanding contributions in putting this production together. The joy I get in directing a project really is about collaboration. There is no greater reward than being with people, creating with people, and telling stories for people.

Thank you to my brother for being the best champion, supporter, and sounding board I could ever ask for. You have been telling me all these years that the Sound of Music was a beautiful story. I finally get it.

And thank you Maria von Trapp and the Trapp Family Singers for fighting for what you believed in and for surviving to write down and tell your story in the book that led to everything we are still talking and singing about today.

The hills are indeed alive…

These are the moments I live for. With much love and appreciation,

I dedicate this to Steve Koek who initially brought me to Summer Place Theater in 2019. Without him, I wouldn’t have found these amazing people.

Jorge Bermudez, Director, Sound of Music 2022

Producer's Note

Auf Weidersehen, Goodbye

At the end of 2022, I’ll be retiring from this wonderful group, having been its President for four years and involved in it for almost 20. My wife and I have a new chapter we’ve been wanting to start and can’t put it off any longer.

But talk about going out on a high note! The levels of talent, experience, passion, and kindness in a production are the highest I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been in some wonderful shows with some wonderful people. Thank you, Jorge, Emma, and Jake, for leading us again, Mary and Taylor for joining us, and our cast and crew for telling a story that’s even more important to heed its warnings now than when it was written 70+ years ago.

Thanks to our board for keeping us afloat, Jeff for keeping me honest, Steve for some sage advice, Ted for remembering our roots, Emma for talking me into it and Christina – once in a post she referred to me as “our beloved president.” - that means the world; thank you for that.
