South Pacific Spotlight: Hal Baas unitizes a wide range of talents for multiple roles
The talented and versatile Hal Baas joins Summer Place Theatre for the first time after performing throughout high school and beyond in plays and dance shows. Trained in modern, tap and ballet dancing, and will also be putting his gymnastics skills to use when he doubles as a sailor and the role of Henry in South Pacific.
The Matea Valley High School graduate is thrilled to join this talented and experienced cast. Hal shared his thoughts on his theater inspirations, dream roles, and more.

QUESTION: Who or what inspired you to start doing theater?
HAL BAAS: It was seeing my high school’s show Next to Normal that had me itching to want to do theater, but it wasn't until my junior year of high school when I saw my school’s play, Noises Off, that I finally was like. “Okay. I have to do this.”
Q: What was the musical that had you fall in love with musicals?
HB: It was A Very Potter Musical from Starkid Productions.
Q: What is the favorite role you've ever played?
HB: Definitely Jamie from the Last Five Years.
Q: What is the dream role you still want to play?
HB: Frankie Valli from Jersey Boys.
Q: What is the most challenging part of bringing this story to life?
HB: Definitely the time period, People were so closed-minded, especially in the military during that time, so trying to convey and relate to that is hard.
Q: If someone was going to make your life into a movie, who would you want to play you?
HB: Asa Butterfield would be cool
Q: What do you do when you’re not doing theater?
HB: Dance.
Q: Which character from South Pacific would you most like to have dinner with and why?
HB: Billis, the Professor and Stewpot, they’re just so funny together and I feel like it'd be a good time.
Q: Why should people come see this production of South Pacific?
HB: It’s amazing and talented cast of people who all really care and are passionate about the show.
