CANCELED: The Sound of Music

The 3rd act of our 3-act season celebrating the strength of the human spirit through difficult times. 2020 is the 75th anniversary of the ending of World War II.

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s beloved The Sound of Music is the hopeful story of an Austrian family in search of a governess who can tame the seven Von Trapp children. Maria, who is in training to become a nun, reluctantly takes on this monumental task. Through kindness and music, she wins the hearts of the children, from tiny Gretl to “Sixteen-Going-On-Seventeen” Liesl.

Her triumph with the children does not impress Captain von Trapp and his fiancĂ©e, Baroness Elsa Schrader—at first. But at a party given at the von Trapp home, the children show off the harmonies and choreography they learned from Maria and make a splash. The captain’s friend Max insists that the children perform at a festival he is organizing, but Germany’s recent annexation of Austria—and Captain von Trapp’s staunch disapproval of the Nazi party—make Max’s request a dangerous one.

Also a movie starring Julie Andrews and a live televised production starring Carrie Underwood, The Sound of Music remains one of the most treasured musicals of the 20th century. It won the Tony for Best Musical in 1960 and has been revived several times since the curtain first went up in October 1959. Its messages of commitment to family, love of music, devotion to country, and contempt for hatred are as relevant now as they were in 1939 when the von Trapp’s story began.
