Biographies

Tedford F. Armistead (Sky Masterson)
Guys and Dolls marks Tedford’s first time working with The Summer Place. He hails from back east where he has appeared in numerous productions, including Cornelius in Hello Dolly, The Calif in Kismet, Donald in Irene, El Gallo in The Fantastiks, Charlie Brown in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown and Richard Henry Lee in 1776 to name a few. Tedford is the Operations Manager for the Chicago Branch of Keane, Inc., a national software services and consulting company. He would like to thank his wife and daughter for their love and support.

Matthew W. Budny (Calvin)
This is Matt’s second show for The Summer Place, having appeared in last year’s The Music Man. He also appeared as Toodles in the Naperville Park District’s production of Peter Pan. Matt graduated this year from Waubonsie Valley High School where he appeared in almost every production produced in the last four years. His last role at W.V.H.S. was that of Lt. Wright in The Secret Garden. He will be attending St Mary’s University of Minnesota where he will pursue a degree in Theatre. Matt would like to thank his family and friends for their support and he wishes his dad and the rest of the cast a good show.

Roger A. Budny (Angie the Ox)
Roger has a B.S. in Communications from St. Mary’s College in Minnesota and majored in Technical Direction and Scenic Design. After a long hiatus from theatre, he rekindled his theatrical fire when his sons Matt and Adam showed interest in the performing arts. Roger has helped with sets at Thayer Middle School and acted as Asst. Technical Director/Scenic designer at Waubonsie Valley High School’s productions of Oklahoma, David and Lisa, West Side Story, Dracula, South Pacific. Roger would like to thank his bride, Bernadette, for the never ending support she has given to the three of them.

Mike Choate (Big Jule)
This is Mike’s second appearance with The Summer Place. He played Charlie Cowell in last year’s production of The Music Man. Mike has been performing in community theatre for more than twenty years. This is the second time he performed in Guys and Dolls having played Nathan Detroit in a previous production. Mike would like to REALLY thank his wife Pam and daughter Amy for their support.

Sheri Davis (Miss Adelaide)
Sheri has been involved in many productions over the last twelve years in community theatre. Recent Summer Place credits include Dottie/Mrs Clackett in Noises Off and Kate in Other People’s Money. She has appeared as Yvonne/Naomi in Sunday in the Park With George for Tempo Players and Charity in Anything Goes at Grove Players within the last year. She has directed The Boys Next Door and Heidi with The Summer Place and originated Ghost Stories in the Park...in the Dark. Sheri, who is a perpetual volunteer, would like to thank her husband, Dan, the Prince of Popcorn.

Mary DeLano (Hot Box Doll)
Mary was last seen on our stage as Velma in West Side Story. Some of her acting credits include roles in The Mikado, Front, Tartuffe, The Most Happy Fella and Six Characters in Search of an Author, all at Illinois Wesleyan University where she is a senior, majoring in Music Theatre. Mary also performed in many productions at Oswego High School, some of which include Peter Pan in Peter Pan, Catherine in The Foreigner, Anna in The King and I, Cinderella in Into the Woods, Oliver in Oliver and Lili in Carnival.

Angelique Doolittle (Miss Sarah Brown)
This is Angelique’s debut at The Summer Place. Her acting credits include the narrator in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Lauri in Oklahoma, Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Antigone in Antigone, Luisa in The Fantastiks for Clark College in Dubuque IA, where she received B.A. in Music Theatre. Recently, she was seen in the Tempo Players production of Annie, as the star-to-be. Angelique is employed as an Insurance Representative and would like to thank God for the gifts He has given her - to give to you.

Nicole Enger (Hot Box Doll)
Nicole has been dancing for the last 13 years and continues her training at Drake University. She was a member of the Naperville School of Performing Arts Dance Company. She has appeared on our stage for the last three years, having had roles in West Side Story and The Music Man. Other credits include Bye Bye Birdie, Carousel and various dance and Drake University Choral Productions. Nicole is a full time student majoring in Elementary Education with an endorsement in Theatre Arts. She is employed this summer in the Alumni Development Office for North Central College.

Kathleen Fanning (Hot Box Doll)
Kathleen is attending Ball State University where she is studying the Performing Arts with a Dance Minor. Some of her theatre experiences include Annie in Chicago, Ursula Merkel in Bye Bye Birdie, Sister in Damn Yankees, Mary Kenny in Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up? and Mimi in Guys and Dolls. Kathleen is very excited to work with The Summer Place for the first time.

Corin Grant (Mission Child)
Corin has played the littlest lost boy to his mother, Cynthia’s, Peter in the Naperville Park District’s production of Peter Pan. Last summer he marched in our Boys Band in The Music Man. Corin and his mother perform together as ME ’N’ C, a musical variety duet and hope to be the greatest mother and son act in the world!

Cynthia Lauren-Grant (Martha)
Cynthia played Eulalie MacKecknie Shinn last summer in the Summer Place production of The Music Man. She and her son Corin have performed together in The Emperor’s New Clothes and were last seen together in Annie, both for Tempo Players.

V. Hope Johnson (Doll)
Hope has been dancing since the age of seven. She has performed ballet, jazz and tap and danced the lead role, “Svanhilda” for Naperville School of Performing Arts production of Capellia. She has been part of the chorus in Oliver for Bolingbrook High School and West Side Story for The Summer Place. Hope also played the lion in Androcles and the Lion, a hound dog in Wiley and the Hairy Man and Helena in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Hope is a student at North Central College majoring in Athletic Training.

Andrew W. Lambertson (Nicely-Nicely Johnson)
This is Andy’s second Summer Place show, having portrayed Peter in Jesus Christ Superstar. He has also appeared in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat with Summer Stage and Annie as Bert Healy, Godspell, Sunday in the Park With George as Franz and The Most Happy Fella as Herman with Tempo Players. Along with performing for The Summer Place, Andy is on the Board of Directors serving as its representative to Season of Concern and legal counsel. Andy is an attorney with the firm of Dommermuth, Brestal, Cobine and West LTD in Naperville.

George Marino (Guy)
George’s past Summer Place roles have been Henry in The Fantastiks, the mayor in Inherit the Wind, the drunk in Look Homeward Angel and several parts in Big River. George is employed as a mathematics teacher at Proviso West High School.

Beth McCauley (Doll)
Beth was in Lazarus with the Community Players. She is also a two and a half year member of the Senior Dance Ensemble of the School of Performing Arts of Naperville. She has danced in several performances including Dance Fest ’95 at Six Flags Great America. Beth has a scholarship for work study at the School of Performing Arts.

Kathy H. Racine (General Matilda Cartwright)
Kathy’s Summer Place roles have included a part in the chorus for Jesus Christ Superstar, Isabelle in Pirates of Penzance and Mr. Fleet, the hare in The Great Cross Country Race. She also assistant directed My Fair Lady. She has also worked quite a bit with Grove Players having performed as Stella in Come Back to the Five and Dime Jimmie Dean, Lady Quigley in Robin Hood, Mama Rose in Gypsy, Young Sally in Follies, Sandra in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Lydia in All My Sons and in the ensemble of The Dining Room. Kathy is a reservation agent for Mayflower Tours.

Tim Royer (Rusty Charlie)
Tim was last seen “bumming around” in Little Shop of Horrors. Some of his favorite roles include Danny in Grease, Jack in Where’s Charlie, Danny in Baby and roles in Disasterama and The Happy Time. Tim is a carpenter by day and a singer, choir director and pianist by night.

René Ruelas (Nathan Detroit)
This marks René’s second appearance in a production of Guys and Dolls. His first was 17 years ago as a high school freshman. Offstage, his theatrical cicada’s hobbies include blushing, avoiding responsibility and identifying strange odors. He’d like to dedicate this show to Mrs. Ganz who makes all the good things better.

Brian Sommer (Society Max)
Brian is a newcomer to The Summer Place. He has been dancing and acting since the age of ten. He has studied dance for six years and dance for three years. Some of his favorite roles include Dr. Howard Sheinfeld in E/R, Mike Depki in Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?, Dromio in The Comedy of Errors, Prince Charming in the world premiere of the Snow White Musical Once Upon a Dwarf and Rick in the Chicago premiere of Sanctuaries. Brian will be attending Oklahoma State University to finish his degree in Fire Protection and Safety. Brian would like to thank Andy for all his help and support.

Aveline Valvano (Doll)
Aveline has been seen on The Summer Place stage for the last two years having had ensemble roles in both West Side Story and Jesus Christ Superstar. Some of her other acting credits include Rose in The Secret Garden, Florence in A Curious Savage, ensemble parts in Oklahoma, West Side Story and South Pacific at Waubonsie Valley High School. She also played Snow White in the Naperville Park District’s production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Aveline works for Budget Rent-A-Car’s Corporate Headquarters and will be a student at the University of Illinois at Champaign/Urbana this spring.

Elizabeth Ann Warmbier (Doll)
Beth is a native of Plainfield and a graduate of Northern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance Performance and a minor in Dance Education. She danced with Northern Dance Theatre and was last seen in productions of Sleeping Beauty Ballet, The Wiz and Bolero, with world renowned Luis Montero, Paquita, Nutcracker, King Lear, Es Iola, Chameleons and the Joliet Kiwanis shows. Beth danced through childhood at Shirley Smith’s Dance Studio in Joliet and she is also a member of the Chicago Dance Coalition. Besides performing and choreographing, Beth is a dance teacher.

Steve Wiesbrook (Lt. Brannigan and Hot Box MC)
Steve most recently appeared as Herb in the Tempo Players production of Godspell. His Summer Place credits include an apostle in Jesus Christ Superstar and a townsperson in The Music Man. Steve is employed as a science teacher at Naperville Central High School, but in the summer his occupation is avoiding real work.

Dr. Donald T. Shanower (Director)
“I have had a varied and exciting time in the theatre all the way from university and summer stock experience to the Showboat, Majestic on the Ohio River. Forty years have been spent here in Naperville producing and directing plays at North Central College and The Summer Place. This production of Guys and Dolls marks the 39th production and the 20th musical I have directed for The Summer Place in the past 29 years. It has been a wild and sometimes frustrating ride, but in the end, invariably there are countless rewards for me. My sincere appreciation extends to those behind the scenes, the thousands who have come to audition over the years and the faithful audiences who have made theatre in Naperville possible.”

Ken Frykholm (Technical Director & Set Designer)
Ken has a M.F.A. from Northern Illinois University and works as a teacher of English, Art and Theatre at Lockport Twp. High School. This is Ken’s 31st production with The Summer Place. He was the scenic designer for the 1995 Illinois High School Theatre Festival’s production of Fiddler on the Roof. His favorite on-stage memory was his 1990 wedding held on The Summer Place stage. Ken and his wife Mandy are the proud parents of six month old Autumn Ashley.

Shannon L. Juzwiak (Stage Manager)
Shannon joined this production mid-stream after leaving the convent, where she was known as Sr. Mary Amnesia in No Center Aisle’s production of Nunsense. Prior to being a nun, she was seen as Alma in The Music Man and Sally Phelps in Big River both for The Summer Place. She enjoys directing and choreographing children’s theatre. By day she works as an administrative assistant at a financial planning office.

Lee McGinty (Vocal Director)
Lee is a member of the music staff at Community United Methodist Church, where she serves as organist and vocalist. She received her musical education at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. This is Lee’s first production with The Summer Place.

Joe Pietrie (Sound & Light Design)
Joe has worked with The Summer Place for the past seven seasons. Some of his technical highlights include The Music Man at the Odeum, Chess for Marriott Lincolnshire and Is There Life After High School? for Tempo Players. Joe was assistant scenic designer for Fiddler on the Roof for the Illinois High School Theatre Festival. Joe and his wife Sue have recently been blessed with the birth of their first child, Beverly Suzanne.

Stephen Thurlow (Music Director and Conductor)
Steve has been department chairman of music at Marmion Academy since 1984. He is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he earned a bachelors in Instrumental Music Education and a masters in applied French Horn. He also studied and was active in stage lighting design. Some of Steve’s musical director credits include West Side Story, The Wiz, Pajama Game, Finnian’s Rainbow and Oklahoma. He has been a horn instructor at Blue Lakes Fine Arts Camp and North Central College. Steve currently is principal horn in the Fox River Valley Symphony.
