Ted Talk: The Making of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "The Sound of Music"

ANOTHER IN OUR VIP SERIES OF EVENTS CELEBRATING OUR PRODUCTION OF "THE SOUND OF MUSIC."

Our own Summer Place member, Ted Waltmire, playwright, musician, and actor, will be discussing the original 1959 stage musical, “The Sound of Music," at Nichols Library on Monday, May 23, starting at 7:00pm.

Drawing from many published sources including “Something Wonderful” by Todd S. Purdam and “Getting to Know Him” by Hugh Fordin, Waltmire will explore the classic musical from idea through performance and underline the importance of Rodgers and Hammerstein in American popular culture. Ted is even offering a trivia contest with prizes as part of the fun for this engaging program!

A key takeaway from the talk is how the stage production is different from the famous movie. There is more emphasis in the play on the Nazi occupation of Austria and the political and social tension that created. There are 2 songs in the play that are NOT in the movie. In fact, during the talk, we'll give you a sneak peek of one of them!

Join us on Monday, May 23, in the Community Room of the Nichols Library, 200 W. Jefferson Avenue in Naperville, from  7:00pm until 8:00pm. Free and open to the public, this program is the second in our series leading up to our performance of "The Sound of Music" in July. But if you're a VIP member, you get preferred seating, and a swag bag!* Learn all about it here.
